The potential of tropical forest restoration for climate action: how can we foster a standing forest economy in Brazil?

Coal Drops Yard, 79-81 Coal Drops Yard, King's Cross, London N1C 4DQ

About this Event

Forest restoration is one of the most effective and promising strategies to tackle climate change and contribute to the 1.5°C goal set by the Paris Agreement.

With its vast territory and rich ecological diversity, Brazil is strategically positioned to lead this global agenda and has committed to restoring 12 million hectares by 2030. Nature-based solutions could provide up to 30% of the emissions reductions needed over the next decade. In addition to environmental benefits, forest restoration offers significant economic opportunities, including the potential to generate billions of dollars in carbon credits.

Brazil’s restoration sector already includes engaged investors and a range of productive models, such as agroforestry systems and sustainable forest management. Natural regeneration alone could sequester up to 16 gigatons of CO₂, highlighting its critical role in climate mitigation. However, scaling these initiatives requires overcoming technical, institutional, and financial barriers by aligning policies, funding, and capacity-building efforts.

This panel will bring together experts from diverse fields to explore pathways for scaling up forest restoration as a strategic asset for climate action in Brazil and beyond.
