Reimagining the Global Financial System for Planetary Resilience: Proposals for the 21st Century
The Garry Weston Library Southwark Cathedral London SE1 9DA
About this Event
Global economists, policymakers, and sustainability leaders will gather to explore transformative reforms to the international financial system, drawing on the recommendations outlined in “Beyond Bretton Woods: Solutions for the 21st Century.” This forward-looking, long-term agenda offers a blueprint for aligning global finance with ecological integrity and social equity.
The roundtable will discuss key proposals for deep international financial architecture reform including:
- Natural Capital Accounting: Embedding ecosystems into national balance sheets to value nature and guide investment
- Real-Time Global Carbon Pricing: Establishing a unified, transparent carbon price to drive decarbonisation and market alignment.
- Climate-Linked Debt Restructuring: Enabling debt-for-nature swaps and automatic relief mechanisms for climate-vulnerable nations.
- Dual-Rate Monetary Policy: Introducing preferential interest rates for biodiversity-positive and low-carbon projects.
- Climate Stabilisation Coin (CSC): Launching an IMF-issued digital currency backed by verified carbon abatement to fund climate action.
Together, these proposals aim to correct systemic mispricing, mobilise sustainable finance at scale, and embed planetary limits into the heart of economic decision-making. The forum will provide a platform for collaboration and commitment to rethinking global financial governance in the face of overlapping ecological and social crises.
