About this Event
Major opportunities are currently emerging in supply chain voluntary climate incentives, such as Scope 3 claims standards, value chain ‘insets’, and other new systems. However, many of these solutions are designed for the Global North, and many Global South stakeholders may struggle to meet the requirements of new guidelines and standards.
Future Earth Lab is partnering with a range of expert organisations to launch a six month consultation process, to capture why Global South participation in these solutions is important, which barriers existing in current solutions, and how to ensure that Global South participation is prioritised by standard setting organisations in line with Climate Justice requirements.
This invite-only workshop is the first information gathering session to set a clear direction for subsequent consultation activities.
Questions for discussion include:
Why is it important to ensure that Global South regions are not excluded from voluntary climate value chain claims?
What specific characteristics of Global South participants – particularly in agriculture – make it more or less challenging to meet the requirements of emerging standards in solutions like carbon ‘insets’ or Scope 3 claims under standards like the Land Sector and Removals Guidance?
What are the climate justice implications for some elements of requirements such as permanence, which imply multi-generational liabilities?
What consultation methodologies are likely to ensure successful consultation – and long term feedback and representation within implemented systems – with smallholder farmers, local communities and other marginalised or underrepresented groups?
What safeguards should be put onto implementation programmes to ensure that they protect climate justice, inclusion and ethical considerations?
Outcomes from session:
Technical white paper outlining session outcomes and implications
Refined consultation design process for 6 month Global South consultation
