Municipal solid waste (MSW) systems are one of the fastest-growing sources of methane emissions worldwide—a potent greenhouse gas with over 80 times the warming power of CO₂ over a 20-year period. Without urgent intervention, emissions from this sector are projected to rise dramatically, undermining global efforts to meet near-term climate targets. Yet the solutions to reduce these emissions are well-known, feasible, and often cost-effective.
The missing link? Finance.
Join us for a high-level public event that brings together leading climate finance experts, city officials, and institutions driving support for methane mitigation in the waste sector. This convening will dive deep into the practical and systemic challenges to financing methane reduction solutions in MSW systems.

The UNEP-Convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) is a partnership of 190 governments, intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations. It works to reduce powerful but short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) – methane, black carbon, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and tropospheric ozone – that drive both climate change and air pollution.
