Just transitions in food, farming and fisheries
SOAS University of London 10 Thornhaugh Street London WC1H 0XG
About this Event
This workshop at London Climate Action Week will bring together experts and stakeholders from across food, environment and human rights sectors to catalyse engagement on just transitions in the food sector and begin to shape an action-oriented project on the human rights impacts of sustainable agri-food transitions.
In response to the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, many industries and sectors are investing in alternative modes of production, including ‘regenerative’ agriculture and aquaculture, and ‘nature-friendly farming’. From an environmental perspective, this is to be welcomed. However, there is limited understanding of the consequences that these transitions will have – and may already be having – on human rights and labour rights. Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), Banana Link and IIED, in collaboration with sectoral experts, companies, NGOs and trade unions, intend to build the evidence base needed to shape policy, practice and investment so that they ensure decent work in the transition to environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient futures.
The aims of the workshop are to:
– Share knowledge and insights on the potential human and labour rights implications of green transitions in food, farming and fisheries.
– Catalyse engagement on just transitions in food systems by bridging the gap between environmental sustainability, human rights and labour rights.
– Contribute to shaping an international research and action agenda on just transitions in food, farming and fisheries.
During the workshop, we will:
– Hear from speakers with experience and expertise related to human and labour rights in green transitions.
– React to insights from exploratory research by ETI, IIED and BananaLink.
– Discuss challenges, opportunities and potential solutions under Chatham House rules.
– Feedback on a research and action agenda being designed by ETI, IIED and BananaLink.
