Green Steel Round Table
Accenture, 30 Fenchurch Street London
About this Event
In 2026 the definitive phase of CBAM will commence in the EU for steel imports; this, along with substantial ESG reporting regulations coming online, is accelerating urgency around sectoral efforts to decarbonise the commodity’s value chain. Companies across the value chain have been pursuing strategies to decarbonise production, but with mixed success and limited scale. Unlocking finance for capital projects has been a major obstacle with little focus on addressing the barriers to accelerate scale. This Roundtable series, running across the COP30 cycle, will discuss how recurrent chokepoints can be tackled to unlock finance for major capital development. We will kick-off the series at London Climate Action Week (LCAW) in June 2025 by digging into expectations and misalignment between industry and investors on transition finance eligibility and deployment and discuss how we might design transition pathways and decarbonisation roadmaps that are investable, equitable and aligned with long-term structural change. At Climate Week New York (CWNY) and UNGA (September 2025) we will delve into the technical and geopolitical realities informing steel decarbonisation, with a focus on building agility into capital projects design and investment structuring with a heavier focus on the deployment of transition finance instruments to navigate volatility and risk. The series will conclude at COP30 (November 2025) with a capstone session pressure testing recommendations with standards setting bodies and host governments, and landing tactical actions on fund structuring and regionalised decarbonisation pathways – moving the needle on the ground in Belem.
Objectives & outcomes:
Break down echo-chambers. Shifting the conversation from top down to bottom up. Address fundamental misalignment in transition finance expectations between investors and industry
Align on what good looks like, and discuss what companies need to do to for their Climate Transition Plans (CTP) and decarbonisation roadmaps to be credible, defensible, investable
Promote a candid conversation under Chatham House rules to directly address perceived exposure points that hinder ambitious CTP commitments; chart mitigation pathways that enable ambitious goal setting whilst satisfying investor risk
