About this Event
The Global Ethical Stocktake (GES) is an innovative initiative jointly launched by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, with the support of the COP Presidency, the Office of the President of Brazil, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, and the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition. It stands as a central element in the lead-up to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), to be held in Belém, Brazil.
Composed of six Regional Dialogues engaging civil society from different parts of the world: 1) North America; 2) Latin America and the Caribbean; 3) Africa; 4) Europe; 5) Asia, and 6) Oceania. In each region, the Circle will have a co-convener responsible for promoting and coordinating the principles, objectives, processes, and outcomes of the GES.
Following this phase, the global report will be finalised and submitted to the COP Presidency for onward transmission to national decision-makers and subsequent consideration in their respective negotiation processes.
A wide diversity of participants from different generations, including: religious leaders, artists, Indigenous Peoples, people of African descent, local communities, youth, scientists, entrepreneurs, women, activists, and policymakers.
Participants will be selected to reflect diversity in terms of identity, geography, sector, and worldview.
During its preparation, the GES received a warm reception and numerous expressions of interest. As a result, a self-organised modality was created, following the same methodology and documentation process, with proposals to be prioritised and submitted to the regional leadership of the GES.
Duration of each Dialogue: 3–4 hours (including a break).
20–30 participants (approximately 5 minutes of speaking time each).
Guiding questions will be sent in advance to participants to support their preparation of contributions.
Each dialogue will honour and incorporate regional traditions and cultures.
Participants’ contributions may take various forms: music, poetry, technical-scientific texts, essays, and visual art.
For this Global Ethical Stocktake – GES – Europe Dialogue, we will have the presence of Minister Marina Silva, from Brazil, and co-convener Mary Robinson
