Empowering Transformations: Natural Resources & the Development-Climate Nexus
The Commonwealth Secretariat, Marlborough House, London SW1Y 5HX
About this Event
Many countries are seeking to leverage natural resources for climate-resilient, inclusive, sustainable development. The Commonwealth Secretariat has been providing independent
advice on natural resources to member states for over 55 years, including in the complex mining and petroleum sectors. These ‘extractive industries’ can catalyse transformative change and prosperity, but also pose unique challenges, including climate change.
They are key contributors to the climate crisis but also hold the key to a sustainable net-zero future.
Navigating the development-climate nexus is especially difficult for vulnerable developing resource-rich Commonwealth countries.
London Climate Week is being held at the half-way point to COP29, and this high-level event will be a critical dialogue for Commonwealth countries and partners to:
- build awareness of resource dependent Commonwealth countries and their key challenges
- highlight the impact of Commonwealth Secretariat’s support, including accelerating
climate mitigation and advancing a just energy transition - explore areas in which greater support and co-operation is needed for catalytic change.
