Billboard Dystopia at The Living Centre and SUV Alliance Drop-in Session

The St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre 2 Ossulston Street London NW1 1DF

About this Event

To focus attention on the cynical tactics deployed by Big Oil advertising Adfree Cities has created a brand new art installation, Billboard Dystopia. Made from re-engineered e-waste, Billboard Dystopia is an anti-advertising billboard which challenges the power of commercial advertising and corporate greenwash in our public spaces. It is a unique, freestanding visual art experience, which hosts a range of bespoke and curated content addressing the volume, nature and impact of harmful advertising – especially by oil majors – which is now on tour across the UK.

Drop-in session with Adfree Cities, Badvertising and the SUV Alliance: Weds 25 June 10am-4pm at The Living Centre

Finding yourself surrounded by highly polluting Sports Utility Vehicles in your neighbourhood? Concerned about the road safety impacts of big cars on local children? Are you a resident or a local councillor seeking remedies for healthier, happier and more liveable towns and cities?

Come along to our drop-in surgery to discuss policy solutions with our campaign team. We’ll provide bespoke recommendations for:
* How you can engage your local authority to end advertising for SUVs, fossil fuels and other high carbon products (following the example of Sheffield City Council and Edinburgh Council)
* How to enact progressive parking tariffs on heavier, bigger and more polluting passenger vehicles.
* How to work with public health experts in your local area

Adfree Cities, Badvertising and the SUV Alliance

Adfree Cities:
Adfree Cities is a network of groups challenging corporate outdoor advertising and reclaiming public space for art, community and nature. We want happier, healthier cities free from the pressures of corporate outdoor advertising. Consumerism drives climate and ecological breakdown, harms wellbeing and undermines local resilience. Together we empower communities to create alternatives. Our movement works to prevent big brand advertising from dominating our public places and make space for what we need to thrive: community connection, solidarity, public art and nature.

Badvertising:
Fossil fuel companies, car companies and airlines spend billions each year advertising their high carbon products - despite growing public concerns over air pollution and climate breakdown. Whoever you are, Badvertising gives you the tools you need to tackle high carbon advertising, supporting a shift in social attitudes away from these products and towards a cleaner, sustainable future.

SUV Alliance:
Large Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and 4x4s are more polluting, more expensive and more dangerous to other road users, yet they are fast becoming the norm in the UK. Pushed by carmakers and their advertisers, who get higher profits from bigger cars, and facilitated by a lack of action from governments, SUVs are taking over our streets, holding back the market for smaller, affordable electric vehicles, and reducing street space for other transport modes.

But there is an alternative. A few simple changes now would ensure that large, polluting, dangerous SUVs are no longer welcome on our streets, and create space for accessible and affordable public transport, active travel and small electric vehicles. This is the vision of safer and fairer streets we want to see.
