Climate Migration and the Importance of Climate Education

Online event

About this Event

Climate change is an escalating threat, and its adverse effects are already evident. Climate change is contributing to current interlinked global crises, including impacting human rights and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. Today’s youth and children feel the intensity of the consequences of the climate crisis in the long run. The failure to allocate resources towards the protection of the climate and people today will inevitably translate into greater expenditures on adaptation and addressing the consequences of environmental degradation in the future. Climate change is predicted to displace 1.2 million people in the year 2050 (World Bank, 2022). Even though many people will be displaced, it will also affect children. Between 2016 and 2021, 43.1 million children will be displaced due to weather related events (UNICEF, 2020). Countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East are already experiencing the impacts of climate change, which is where the importance of climate education comes in to educate youth about the impacts of climate migration and displacement. Youth play an important role when it comes to talking about climate mobility and it’s important to explore what role they have in talking about climate migration and displacement through the use of climate education. This event will focus on looking at how climate education can be used as tool for youth to educate their communities on the effects of climate migration and displacement.
