What is the circular economy?
Climate change will affect us all in Lewisham, whether through supply chain challenges, hotter summers, flooding or increased energy bills.
But there are many brilliant ways we can help reduce these risks, such as reducing how much fuel or packaging we use. The transition to a ‘circular economy’ will provide new opportunities whilst helping to protect our local and global communities from the effects of climate change.
To improve our environment locally and globally, we must change how we create, consume, use, and dispose of things. This means considering the full life cycle of anything we sell or make. It could be re-using what we already have, buying second-hand, reducing waste, and recycling more.
It also means more sharing, repairing and selling things that can be used over and over again, recycled easily into other things, or go back into the earth as compost.
Lewisham Council, Blue Garage
London Borough of Lewisham are being hosted by Blue Garage to celebrate and showcase our local circular economy. The second local authority in London to declare a climate emergency, Lewisham is invested in fostering a circular economy.
Deputy Mayor of Lewisham and Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate Action, Councillor Louise Krupski, said:
“We are proud to be moving towards a more circular economy in Lewisham, one that helps us meet our climate and environmental goals while also prioritising better spending, so savings can be reinvested into other areas.
“Repairing, recycling, and reusing is not just about fixing day-to-day items but more broadly it is about improving the way we live, work and act, so we function as a more thoughtful, efficient and resilient community."
Blue Garage are a social enterprise based in South London, offering affordable, high-quality workspaces and fully equipped workshops designed for small businesses, makers, and creatives.
