Article 6 in action: Shaping the future of global carbon markets

The Bonn Climate Change Conference in June 2025 presents one of the first chances to stocktake progress towards the international carbon trading framework under the Paris Agreement, this session is designed to probe the opportunities and challenges that Article 6 presents and unpack what this means for the future of international carbon markets. The first part of the session will serve as a platform to introduce key aspects related to international carbon trading and providing insight into the first few years of practice under Article 6.2 and the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism. During the second part of the session panellists will reflect on this state of play– identifying the prospects and pitfalls for climate mitigation it yields, including with reference to challenges related to environmental integrity, responsible use and the dynamic relationship between public and private sector that the framework creates. The third part of the session will showcase some of the latest novel research from the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group that targets these issues and seeks to offer forth a clear path to net zero aligned carbon markets–both domestically and internationally. The session will then facilitate active audience exchange on the next steps of Article 6’s operationalisation. Following the session refreshments will be served.
