AI for a Sustainable Future: Opportunities, Challenges, and Critical Conversations

online

About this Event

Artificial Intelligence is transforming our world at an unprecedented pace—bringing with it not only groundbreaking opportunities but also complex challenges. From revolutionising industries to reshaping how we tackle global issues, AI is at the forefront of innovation.

AI, one of the most promising frontiers? Sustainability and climate action. AI is already making a difference (e.g., Smart agriculture systems, improving efficiency and integrating renewable sources more effectively, Climate modelling tools). These affordances open up powerful new ways to address the climate crisis, reduce waste, and build more resilient communities. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

Avoiding technological determinism—the idea that technology alone will save us – we need a critical, inclusive dialogue about how AI can be used ethically and equitably. How do we ensure AI doesn’t deepen the digital divide, reinforce biased systems, or contribute to rising carbon emissions through energy-intensive models?

This roundtable brings together the general public, academics, students, and industry leaders to explore these urgent questions. Together, we’ll examine how AI can be a force for good—supporting a more just, sustainable, and climate-resilient future.

We want to invite the public to participate in this conversation. Each speaker will have 5 minutes to present an idea or a provocation, and then we will open for questions from the moderator and the public.
